NWSL Issues Lifetime Bans, Suspensions, and Fines

NWSL issues lifetime bans, suspensions, and fines as corrective action in response to the findings of a Joint Investigative Report released in December 2022.

Individual Sanctions 

Permanent Exclusion from NWSL

NWSL issues lifetime bans to the following:

  • Paul Riley
  • Christy Holly
  • Rory Dames
  • Richie Burke
Suspension and Future Employment in the NWSL is Conditional 

Ineligible to work in the NWSL in any capacity for two (2) years. Future employment will be based on factors set forth by the Commissioner.

  • Craig Harrington
  • Alyse LaHue
Future Employment in the NWSL is Conditional 

Based on factors set forth by the Commissioner.

  • Farid Benstiti 
  • James Clarkson 
  • Vera Pauw 
  • Amanda Cromwell
  • Sam Greene
  • Aline Reis

Organization Sanctions 

Fines Greater Than or Equal to $1 Million and Systemic Changes  

Governing Bodies 

  • NWSL League Office
  • U.S. Soccer: The NWSL has no authority over U.S. Soccer.  

Clubs 

  • Chicago Red Stars: $1.5 Million. Further, Arnim Whisler is selling the team.
  • Portland Thorns: $1 Million. Further, Paulson is selling the team.
Fines Greater Than or Equal to $100,000  
  • Racing Louisville: $200,000. Further, Racing Louisville will be required to hire a distinct sporting staff.
  • North Carolina Courage: $100,000. Further, the Courage will be required to hire a distinct sporting staff.
Fines Greater Than or Equal to $50,000  
  • OL Reign: $50,000
  • Gotham FC: $50,000

Clubs Named But Not Subject to Penalties 

  • Washington Spirit
  • Kansas City Current
